THE SAGITTARIUS IN A NUTSHELL: Sagittarius rules the sky now as Mercury joins the sun and Mars in the sign of the centaur. But what is a centaur? This strange race happened as a trick of the gods. The creature is descended from Ixion, a mere mortal who has designs on Hera, the wife of Zeus. Zeus sends a cloud in the shape of his wife to fool Ixion, which works all too well. Ixion and the cloud version of Hera have a tryst resulting in an offspring. The combination of cloud and man, it turns out, is not so fortunate. The poor child’s appearance is startling to all who see him and he grows up misunderstood and rejected by gods and humans alike. So he does what any freaky-cloudy-guy would do – he dates a horse. Thus begins the race of centaurs. The creatures are a melding of magic and hedonism, worldliness and otherworldliness. Sagittarius is the most heroic of the centaurs, having shown great heart and sacrifice to Zeus, who rewards him by immortalizing him as a constellation. The Sagittarian stellar arrangement is that of a fierce fighter whose bow and arrow are always drawn, ready to fire at a moment’s provocation.
